DEAN’S MESSAGE
DEAR ALUMNI, COLLEAGUES & FRIENDS,
A
s I reflect on the past year, I am proud of the
significant advancements and accomplishments
that have defined the College of Engineering
at The University of Alabama. From cuttingedge research and teaching endeavors to impactful
community outreach, the efforts of our faculty, staff
and students have resulted in success and recognition
at national and international levels.
Our College secured more than $100 million in new
research awards during the last fiscal year, marking
an unprecedented milestone. This achievement is
undoubtedly a testament to the dedication, hard work
and ingenuity of our faculty, who continuously raise the
standard of excellence in engineering and computer
science education and research here at the Capstone.
More importantly, these competitive grant awards won
by our faculty fuel our ability to educate and train an
increasing number of graduate and undergraduate
students through hands-on experiential learning in
our labs. The technical expertise and talents of our
students have been on display in many forms this
year, but I am especially proud of the outstanding
performances and wins by members of our student
competition teams, who have earned top finishes in
prestigious competitions, excelling in areas ranging
from motorsports to lunar robotics.
I would be remiss not to acknowledge our alumni
and supporters whose contributions have had a
profound impact on our students and programs. They
are an integral part of our community, and the success
of our College would not be possible without their
generosity and investment in our mission.
Within this issue of Capstone Engineer, you will find
inspiring stories of the faculty and students who are
pushing the boundaries of innovation. The magazine
also showcases notable developments, including our
new department heads and state-of-the-art facilities.
One of the greatest privileges of serving as dean
is witnessing the transformative research that takes
place within our College and our use of that researchintensive environment to educate and train some of the
brightest students in the nation. I can confidently say
that we are engineering a better future, and I hope you
will agree after reading the highlights from this recordbreaking year.
The Capstone Engineer is The University of Alabama
College of Engineering’s alumni magazine, which is
produced by the College’s Office of External Affairs.
It was first issued in the early 1980s as a newsletter and
became a magazine in the early 1990s. It has become
a valued resource for alumni and supporters to stay
informed of news and events within the College.
